Primary Role and Purpose: The English teacher provides students with appropriate educational activities and experiences that enable them to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth. He/she helps students develop the skills necessary to be productive members of society. The teacher is also responsible for maintaining classroom discipline, documenting attendance and monitoring the academic progress of each student assigned to his/her classroom.
Qualifications: Teachers must meet the basic Texas Standard for teachers and hold Bachelor’s degree or higher from a four-year college our university. Candidates must also demonstrate competency to teach in the subject area of instruction by holding a Bachelor’s degree or higher or have a minor (or the equivalent of a minor) in the subject area of instruction; or passed the TExES/ExCET test in the content area. A valid Texas teaching certificate is preferred. Credits earned in a closely related field may be used to make a determination of competency. Competency may also be demonstrated by having a Bachelor’s degree plus at least one year of teaching in the subject area at the high school level.
